YA Spaces

Here's a link to some photos of teen spaces featured in Kimberly Bolan's book "Teen Spaces, the step-by-step library makeover".

I really like the use of nontraditional materials like Christmas lights and butterfly chairs to add a touch of 'dorm decor' to a YA space.

Here's Bolan's list of teen-friendly furniture and decor vendors.

Check out these nutty restaurant-style computer booths!

On the YALSA-BK listserv, librarians recently discussed the signage that marked the area as teens only.

Here is some of the wording other libraries use:

All adults and children must be accompanied by a teen.

Between the hours of 2 and 6 p.m., seating in the young adult room is reserved for students in grades 5-12 only.

Thank you for keeping the YA Corner a Teens-Only area.

Following a recent incident that involved an adult committing an act of indecent exposure in my teen area, I am very interested in this kind of signage.

Those are great YA spaces, Autumn. The computer boothes give the teens plenty of space to work in!

Wow, I want one of those booths for my own home office! It is nice to make teen spaces casual and bedroom like...I agree. They like to sit low or on the floor, or even to lie down to read. Scattering books and periodicals about, instead of neatly shelved, seems more inviting to them as well. Teen spaces should be for relaxation and comfort. They sit upright in hard desks all day at school, so we need to make the library more reflective of a home atmosphere for them. See my new page under TLC.
