Using Pipes

What are Pipes?  A way of filtering your RSS feeds (other things as well) to refine your professional reading or job hunting.

Go to http://pipes.yahoo.com/pipes/.  You will need a Yahoo account to use Pipes.  Log in or create your account.

Click Create a Pipe in the upper right corner.

Go through the little video tutorial.

Try Fetch Feed with Filter under the Operators heading and see what you get.

Setting Up Alerts to Monitor Your Image

Google Alert

Go to http://www.google.com/alerts.

Use your name or your library's name as the search terms. Don't forget variations of your name!  For example, I have an alert for "Kathy Makens" as well as "Katherine Makens."

You don't have to create a Google account to use Google alerts.  You may wish to if you need to organize many different alerts.

Tweet Beep

Go to http://tweetbeep.com/.

Signing up for an account lets you search tweets for all the variations of your name or your library's name beyond @yourtwitterusername.

You can do the same thing with a #tag.

Free so long as you stay under 200 alerts per month.
