Links to Other Research--

Short bits of interesting information as we plan for our future and adapt to our present

Learning from others

We don't need to invent the wheel.  Librarians have always been really willing to share their ideas with other librarians and to learn from others.  Here are some links to photos of other libraries and makeover ideas.

Potpourri:

There's lots of cool stuff out there related to libraries which we can use to make DCL the best library in town.  I can't seem to fit all the stuff in to a nice, neat subject heading (we need a cataloger!).  Subject heading or not, you should check these links out.

Notes from the outside

Curious about the public's perception of libraries?  Check these links out.

Visiting Librarians

At our Staff Day on May 10th, we had two wonderful librarians visit and inspire us.  They've also been nice enough to add their thoughts and some neat links.

Technology and Libraries

Want to know about the newest techie thing to hit libraries?  What about the possible reverberation effects on on our staff, our buildings and our customers.  Check out these neat links and articles.

YouTube

If you thought YouTube was just a place to watch cute kittens, people doing stupid things, and little known rock groups, check out these videos related to libraries.  There's something for everyone--serious and funny alike.   Learn about the new online culture or just laugh at "library crimes."

FYI: I viewed the PP presentation. It needed to be saved in order to be viewed, and it took quite awhile to download. I like the bookstore model of book display, etc., and creation of more comfortable, and welcoming environments. I hope we think to survey teens themselves, in order to gather information from the source as to what would be the most effective YA environment and service.

A survey is a great idea! We can run one online and on paper this summer. I wonder what kind of questions will help kids quantify the notions of being inviting, cool and useful?

I read the article, "The Public Library as an Asylum for the Homeless". I admit my first thought was to be glad I don't work at Main. The article made me wonder what would happen if libraries decided to refuse to accept the de facto roles of ER, homeless shelter, and psych ward. Public funds should be paying for these services, but through the proper institutions, not making libraries take up the slack.

Autumn: I am holding my first Teen Advisory Council April 24th. I am going to hand out a (paper) survey there. I'll send you a copy. Later, perhaps we can collaborate on a survey and use survey monkey (http://www.surveymonkey.com/)for both online and hard copy survey's. I've used it before. It works great and you can keep stats. and teens seem to like being asked and answering the questions.

Everyone should check out the catalog that uses "Library Thing". It's awesome!
