Here are results from a national study about the way libraries are perceived by the general public:

ALA has a report it's put out this April on the State of American Libraries.
Chronicle of Higher Education has an interesting article on "The Four Habits of Highly Effective Librarians." In it, the author lists openness, responsiveness, collaboration, and communication as the habits librarians have to have. While this is directed towards academica librarians, I think the point is important for us as well.
