Goal 3: What we are working on

Page history last edited by jlohmann@... 15 years ago

Here are some of the highlights on what staff is working on to make the library a stronger leader in information technology for Durham residents.  Check out the details of Goal 3 on the Goal 3 page.  If you have comments, please add them!

1.  The library's IT staff set up four Internet-express computer stations on the second floor of the Main Library.  These stations are limited to 30-minutes each.  There are also 2 15-minute only computers on the first floor.

2.  The plans for the new Main Library currently include 158 new public computers.  The new Regional Libraries currently being built will include 30 computer each.

3.  Main, North, East, and Warren all now have wireless.  It will be the new Regionals being built.

4.  For the past couple years we have been participating in the Community Workshop Series through the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  This series of computer classes has worked great for us.  With the addition of a set of laptops (the roving computer class), we have been able to add computer classes to North and East Regional.  We will soon be having them at Warren and will have them at the new Regional libraries.

5.  While not exactly an online program, DCL is working on using web 2.0 technologies to advertise for programs.  We've had one book club program for people in their twenties and thirties (gen-teXt) and have been using Facebook.com and Meetup.com to advertise.  It seems to be working to at least give us more access points for people in our community.

6.  New e-audiobooks are here.  Have you checked out audiobooks from Overdrive yet?

7.  Our newly redesigned website has more locally relevant information and that content is only increasing as the website gets better and better.

8.  The Emerging Technologies Committee has been working on database classes for staff.  This should help us promote our databases to the public and better answer reference questions.
