  • A library card that attaches to my key ring like the grocery stores have. My keys are usually handy. My wallet is not. My check out usually goes like this: My 1 year old is on my hip and I am digging through my purse to find my wallet and have to thumb through the credit cards to find my library card.

  • I’d like to be able to request books via email that the library does not have. When I last researched a book that the library didn’t have and asked about this, the employee pulled out a form to fill out and return to them. I’d love to do this electronically on your website.

  • I’d like to be notified via email when that book has come in.

  • I’d like an email to tell me that my book/video/puzzle is due the next day.

  • I would love for Main to have 'shopping baskets' for people to carry their books in, similar to those at the new branches. There are some of these in the Children's room right now, but people are discouraged from using them outside of the children's room.

  • Teen spaces with nice computers where we could do programs with them on making their own web pages, Photoshop, Flash, and all the other cool things that would give them an edge as they apply to college and go on to succeed in life.

  • More signage! See examples here.  Look for a little humor about signage here.

  • Space for displays about "as seen on" near the entrance of the various libraries.  This would be a great way to circulate older titles too--just because it was on the Colbert Report a year ago, doesn't mean people might not still be interested in it.  We could spark there "I meant to read that" button buried back in their brains.

  • More trash cans in public areas! How can we expect people to throw trash into an appropriate receptacle if they can't find one?

  • All branches should be able to use their walls for display space for posters, community art etc.

  • I would love to have paperback and magazine exchanges at all branches. The old North Durham Branch had one and it was wonderful! I could take all my magazines there to be read by someone else and also pick up magazines that I would like to read but not subscribe to. Ditto for the books. I also suspect they took some of the books for the book sale. Please bring this back!

  • How come when you call main there is no phone message? It just rings and rings. How much would it cost to get a machine to answer the phone to say the hours and stuff?

  • Can we do this here at the Library?  It would cost us very little to let large researchers use our computers while the library is closed and it would help out researchers a lot.

  • Can we make all the clocks in the Library (at least Main), including the computers, read the same time?  Besides being confusing for staff, customers are unhappy when the clock says its 11:15 and the time they are given says 11:25 on the computer and there is no one sitting at the computer.  Sometimes they wait (and then miss their time because the computer time is 10 minutes faster than the clock), sometimes they complain that there are free computers and it assigned them to a wait, and sometimes they just wander around trying to get on those free computers.

  •  Could the wall next to the elevators (where you can see the elevators) have a bench for people to sit at while they wait for the elevetor?  There used to be a bench there.  It was well used by those who can not stand or walk while waiting for the elevators.

  • Could there also be seat near the catalog computers on the second floor of the Main Library?

  • Could we design the third floor so that there can be seats on the third floor in the stacks in the back while patrons are looking for books?  Could there at least be places to set books down while looking through them?

  • Could paperback fiction books be stored alphabetically - I hate having to look through all the turnstyles to find the one book I am looking for.  It would also be nice to be able to tell from the computer catalog if a book is in the paperback or hardback section - maybe both could be stored together so that you could look at all books by the same author together instead of having to wander back and forth and look all over the shelves.

  • When the Main Library is removated, could a shower/changing area for staff be added? Those of us who bike to work, or exercise on our lunch breaks, could clean up more easily without resorting to baby wipes in the bathroom. Also, please make sure the shower/changing area has extra ventilation and/or extra air conditioning vents to keep it non-humid!
