Kathy Makens

I currently head the Adult Services Department of the South Regional Library in Durham, North Carolina.  I have worked with adults, teens and children in a wide variety of library settings and have a great interest in using emerging technologies in the library.  I have presented at conferences for the American Libraries Association, the North Carolina Library Association, Computers in Libraries, the Florida Library Association, and others on gaming in libraries, career development and marketing with library 2.0.  Below are some of my presentations and programs.

Computers in Libraries 2011

I have left the little blurb below from the conference for posterity:

Visit Library 2.0

If you have opened this page by scanning a QR code, you are at Computers in Libraries 2011 and have tripped over part of the Cheap & Fun Ways to Reach Gen X&Y Cyber Tour!  This QR Code is part of an informal example of a geocache game.  Feel free to follow the clues to a small prize!  View the presentation and other content below.  Email me at kmakens@durhamcountync.gov or tweet me @kmakens with your questions.  If you'd like to try to find the geocache and were unable to attend the presentation, your starting coordinates are 38° 54' 59" N by 77° 2' 41" W.  Your first hint is "Aaron is flush with excitement from everything he has learned at Computers in Libraries and needs something to lean on."  If you need help, I can also help you along.

Outreach 2.0

  • Outreach 2.0 Powerpoint which includes all the links to example games.
  • PMOG Handout A basic guide to getting started with PMOG.  Please email if you have questions.
  • Game Design A basic overview of how to get started with Gamemaker.  Contact me if you need more.
  • Gaming in Libraries 2.0 - This is an article that explains some issues to conside when using software like Gamemaker and paying for a service like YDACS.  There is no one size fits all solution.  Really think about what you want for your library before you decide.

Gaming in Libraries: New Trends from the Future of Libraries Conference SEFLIN

  • SEFLIN 2008 This presentation shows how some libraries have started using online games as a form of outreach and library instruction. It also shows how you can do the same in your library, even if you have no money or technical knowledge.
  • PMOG How To How to get started with PMOG.

  • Game Maker Introduction An example of how to learn video game design with shareware.

Library 2.0

  • Library 2.0 Powerpoint- This is a presentation I gave at the South Florida Young Adult Network annual meeting in the summer of 2006.  It was meant for an audience of teen librarians, but it gives a good overview of library 2.0 concepts and how they can be applied in a library setting.  The second half of the presentation focuses on interesting ways of using video games in libraries.  The Gaming in Libraries presentation below has the most current statistics.
  • Library 2.0 Handout - This is a nice webliography to help with teen librarian professional development, but it is also useful to librarians who work in other areas.

Gaming in Libraries

  • Gaming in Libraries PowerPoint- This is a presentation I gave at the Florida Library Association Conference in the spring.  While this presentation is suspiciously similiar to the second half of the one I gave at the SFYAN  meeting above, I included this presentation because it nicely breaks down different gaming programs by budget, includes program which were not included above, and the statistics listed are all current.
  • Gaming in Libraries 2.0 - This is an article that I wrote for Young Adult Library Services in 2007.
  • Game Design How To - A handout I used for an ALA Midwinter 2007 poster session which shows what kind of videogame design program you can provide with different budgets, abilities, and time available.
  • Gaming in Libraries Symposium - All the presentations from the 2005 miniconference - really worthwhile.  They are PDFs so some of them may take some time to load

Computer Security

  • Security on the Internet - How to protect your computer and what to do once you've messed up royally.  Also included what to do if you think your the victim of identity theft.

Teen Programs

  • Make Your Own Movie!- This is one I used over the summer to show kids how they could make and edit their own movie.  Keep your eyes open for beta software from major companies that you can use for your programs!
  • Teen Tech Week Video Game Design Program - a cheap and relatively stress free way to give a Teen Tech Week program.
