Comments from the Henrico Bus Trip

 

After the Henrico Bus Trip, we were all asked to list six different features we saw, three which we could make use of in the short term here at Durham County and three which are long-term ideas. (See also Observations from Youths' Perspective)

 

Short-Term Ideas

 


More lighting  

More portraits/artworks

 

 


Use of bright paint in the children's area/teens  

Evanced system: room reservations, summer reading online sign-up, program reservation

Artword

Brighter lights and nice light fixtures

Slat wall

More display shelves

 

 


I think that express holds is something that DCL can easily do in a very short time.  Customers seem to appreciate the self-service feature and it moves things through quicker

Items on sale by friends--this could be year-round money for the friends

Periodicals housed behind plastic holders with tilt shelves  

 

Art contest for children with permanent display for winners

Porn policy on display next to (each) computer

 

 


More computers with better furniture and cable management 

"Cafe" or  "living-room" furniture

Themed displays 

 


Portable laptops to go to libraries around the county for compter classes in meeting rooms  

 

Lots of signage about cell phones, computer use, noise, drinks, etc

Give teens a real space for themselves - big enough, not adjacent to the kiddies.

Sound-absorbent materials; when it's quieter, people speak more quietly, because they can.

High ceilings - 20 feet minimum.

Creating a friendly enviroment by using all the resources availbale with the community

At the first two libraries we visited I saw a bold approach to incorperating form, color, texture, shape and so on into a library building
